Nighttime trail running races are becoming increasingly popular, highly attractive due to the star-filled landscapes and their competitive challenge.
This is compounded by the fact that we often end up running at night during our training due to our daily obligations. Or because of winter, when it starts getting dark around 6 pm.
It's not as bad an idea as it might first seem, since running through a nighttime landscape can be a wonderful and peaceful experience, adding a whole new dimension to your run. Here are 8 tips to follow to fully enjoy the experience and do it safely:
1. DON'T EXPECT TO FIND THE LIGHT
It seems obvious, but we're so used to streetlights for running at night that we can forget that trails are dark places. If you're lucky, the moon might illuminate the path, but otherwise you'll find yourself in complete darkness and won't even be able to see what's under your feet.
For this reason, always use a headlamp to illuminate the route ahead: the more powerful, the better. To run on dark, unlit trails, you'll need at least 300 lumens to guide you across uneven terrain.
2. EXPLORE FAMILIAR ROUTES
Now is not the time to try new routes or shortcuts; you could easily make a mess of things. Keep in mind that everything looks different in the dark, and it's very easy to become disoriented, lose your way, or even get lost. Stick to routes you know perfectly, including hazards, uneven patches, and particularly challenging sections. This isn't so easy if you're participating in a race where you haven't done the route before, so make sure you study the route map thoroughly and always carry it with you.
3. ADAPT YOUR RUNNING PACE
It goes without saying that running on uneven trails in the dark requires extra caution. The last thing you want is a twisted ankle or even a fall caused by an unseen tree root or rock, especially at night. Nighttime trails aren't the place to set personal bests, so slow down, experience the peace and quiet of the trails, and enjoy nature.
4. ENHANCES AGILITY
Even at a slower pace, running on winding, curved trails at night sharpens your senses and reduces your reaction time, improving agility and focus. Running on uneven terrain also engages many auxiliary muscle groups, conditioning your entire body and boosting performance.
5. TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCONNECT
Despite being fully present in the moment and your surroundings, you'll also disconnect from everyday stressors. This fosters a state of calm and tranquility, providing a break from daily worries and mental relaxation. Running on quiet trails at night, combined with heightened senses, increased alertness, and concentration, enhances this effect. The night trails are all yours, so take your time to enjoy them and unwind.
6. Dress appropriately
The weather can change at any moment, and the temperature at night can also drop dramatically. The advantage is that it will be a more comfortable run with less chance of overheating. Depending on the time of year, it's also advisable to bring a waterproof jacket and even a thermal base layer during the colder months.
7. SAFETY COMES FIRST
Safety is the number one priority. It's important to always tell someone where you're going for a run and when you plan to return. Always carry your cell phone in case of an emergency and be sure to wear high-visibility clothing. Even if you're not near a road, you'd be surprised by the number of cyclists, walkers, and other runners you might encounter, so make sure you're visible.

8. RUN WITH A COMPANION
Nighttime trail running is wonderful. Despite this, the anxiety of getting lost, being alone in the dark, and general safety considerations can make running at night an intimidating activity. Bringing a friend along can help dispel some of those fears and is also safer. Plus, running together on the trails in the dark is a lot of fun and a truly special experience, so find a running partner and give it a try.
See you on the mountain!
